Installing A Geothermal System
Installer: Chris Sylves at Nittany Geothermal
Furnace: ClimateMaster Tranquility 27

If ClimateMaster can write false information to the Attorney General then what do you think they do in their own marketing literature? If I had to do it over, I would discount ClimateMaster's claims, especially ones disparaging other geothermal systems, and then choose a less expensive, and hopefully more honest, product and manufacturer.

If I had to do it all over again, based upon what I now know (discussions with ClimateMaster Senior Vice President and General Council, reading much of the installation and other technical documentation, seeing the ClimateMaster in actual use, seeing in detail the construction of the ClimateMaster components and witnessing the installation), I would likely not use ClimateMaster and instead use Sunteq LTD, the owner Dan impressed me as a very knowledgeable installer and Sunteq LTD is just north of here. Another alternative, of course, is Water Furnace.

Because of the situation with the ClimateMaster I sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding, what I consider, deceptive business practices and a botched installation. The FTC is charged with protecting America's consumers. I have also sent a letter to the Pennsylvania Attorney Generals Office making use of the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law. Each such letter takes weeks to research and prepare, so it is quite an effort. ClimateMaster finally responded to the PA Attorney General but unfortunately ClimateMaster's letter had false information. Now, why would they include false information to the Attorney General of all people! Good Heavens, you would think that any letter to an Attorney General would be carefully researched for accuracy! Well, this is going to make it just a little more difficult. Sunteq LTD or Water Furnace are definitely looking very appealing to me.

The following graph shows up-to-date monitoring of a ClimateMaster Geothermal System installed by Chris Sylves at Nittany Geothermal. I hooked the geothermal system up to a data acquisition system I made which continuously samples operating parameters of the geothermal unit. To see the latest results simply refresh this page. Over the coming months I will use this to:

  • Monitor the system in order to determine how it cycles and if I can keep it at stage-1 heating/cooling only.
  • See how the borehole field cycles (it should cycle too if its capacity is marginal!).
  • Itemize initial, maintenance and electricity costs to determine the cost effectiveness.
  • Report some observations.

If you have questions then please email Ed VanVliet at ed@vvi.com. I'll be happy to discuss the installation and product selection details.

Comments:

  • At this time, I'm most interested in determine the heat capacity of the geothermal field. That is why I am sampling the current parameters. By viewing the graph over several months I will be able to determine system heat capacity, latency and threshold.

  • Every so often I move around the sensors and add sensors so the graph may change historically in a way that is not consistent with the legend.
